Global Industrie 2026, Paris: Navigating uncertainty - why material choice is becoming a strategic decision for European industry

Industrial operators are navigating a more complex and uncertain environment than in recent years. Trade pressures, geopolitical developments and shifting regulatory expectations are all reshaping how decisions are made across the European industry.
At the same time, demand for higher-performing materials continues to grow, driven by more extreme operating conditions across sectors such as chemicals, hydrogen, renewables and nuclear.
At this year’s Global Industrie conference in Paris, this unease came through clearly in conversations we had with visitors there. The challenge is no longer just performance, but performance under increasingly unpredictable conditions.
In this context, materials are no longer a secondary specification. They are a decision that directly affects safety, uptime and long-term performance.
Operating under global pressures
One of the most consistent themes from the event was the level of uncertainty across the international landscape. Visitors to our booth highlighted trade restrictions, quotas, customs duties and wider geopolitical shifts and unrest are all contributing to increasing supply chain complexity, particularly for those operating across multiple regions.
This uncertainty is already visible in day-to-day operations. Lead times can become less predictable, material availability may fluctuate, and sourcing decisions are often made with reduced visibility compared to more stable market conditions. In some cases, this requires additional evaluation of materials or suppliers, particularly in regulated or performance-critical environments.
This is where integrated production becomes increasingly important. With our own fully integrated European manufacturing facilities, controlling every stage from melt through to finished product, we were able to speak with visitors about the consistency and traceability this provides - something that is difficult to replicate in a more fragmented supply chain.
It is no longer enough for materials to simply meet specification. They need to be available when required, consistent from batch to batch, and capable of performing reliably over time.
Advancing material performance
As operating conditions become more demanding, material performance is being pushed further. In sectors like chemical processing, hydrogen and energy, tubing must withstand higher temperatures, pressure and increasingly corrosive environments over time.
This shift was clear at Global Industrie. The conversation is no longer just about meeting specifications, but about long-term reliability under real operating conditions.
Our hydraulic and instrumentation tubing generated strong interest, particularly proven grades like Alleima® 3R60, 316/L valued for their consistency and availability. At the same time, there was growing demand for more advanced alloys such as Sanicro® 35 and SAF® 3006, designed for more aggressive environments.
We also saw strong engagement around heat exchanger and high temperature tubing solutions, where efficiency and lifespan are directly linked to material choice. Interest in Alleima® HighN50 bar was high, particularly for applications requiring a combination of strength and corrosion resistance.
Alongside performance, sustainability is becoming a more data-driven discussion. Customers are increasingly seeking clear, measurable insights to inform material selection.
Overall, the shift is clear: material decisions are moving beyond upfront performance toward long-term reliability, efficiency and lifecycle value.
Strong partners
What also came through clearly is that customers are not just looking for materials. They are looking for partners who can support them over the long term. That includes technical expertise, consistent supply and the ability to respond when conditions change.
It also increasingly includes digital and AI-driven tools that provide greater visibility into materials, traceability and performance.
Solutions such as Alleima’s eTrack platform help customers by offering a clear overview of stock availability and tube product supply, supporting more informed decision-making.
Looking ahead
The conversations at Global Industrie reflect a broader shift across industry. As uncertainty continues to shape the operating landscape, materials are becoming more central to wider business strategy.
For operators, the challenge is no longer simply selecting materials that meet a specification. It is about making material decisions that account for supply chain uncertainty, evolving operating conditions and long-term performance.
Material choice has moved beyond engineering detail. It is now a strategic decision, with a direct impact on reliability, efficiency and overall operational resilience.
